Anna, my 5th grader, who will be 11 this month, won the Maplewood-Richmond Heights Elementary School written spelling bee this past week — with no errors!! There were 40 other competitors. Words included those coming from various cultures (French, Chinese, German, etc.) or original root languages, including Greek.
The 35 words called out for Anna to write down were:
artichoke, average, sugar, manicure, gorgeous, rehearse, bratwurst, ninja, teriyaki, tsunami, haiku, origami, mammoth, tundra, sable, vampire, yacht, caboose, cruiser, frolic, scrabble, guru, nirvana, typhoon, slaughter, iguana, pecan, chronology, hygiene, thesaurus, rhinoceros, sombrero, hacienda, quesadilla, and cafeteria.
Maybe something is "rubbing off" on her from my love of language. She moves on to the Maryville University (St. Louis area) campus written semi-finals next, so I'm really proud of her.
